Prior to Installation
Should I schedule a time for my meters to
be exchanged?
Appointments are needed only for customers
whose meters were not accessible when the MidAmerican Energy hired contractor
was working in the area. If access is needed at your location, a door
hanger will be left with a phone number for you to call for an appointment.
Do I need to be present when the automated meter
reading technology is installed?
We will need access to your meters, and you will need to be present if your
meters are inside. If your meters are outside and accessible, you do not
need to be present. However, if you usually leave a gate unlocked or keep
pets inside during regularly scheduled meter readings, you should do the
same when the installer is in your area.
I already have a meter that MidAmerican reads remotely;
does my meter(s) still need changed?
You will be notified if your meter(s) will be changed.
During Installation
What if I am not present while the installation
takes place?
If you are not present, a door hanger will be left letting you know the
replacement was completed. If the installation was not completed, a door
hanger will be left with additional instructions. Please use the number
on the door hanger to make arrangements for the contractor to come back
to your property.
If I am present when the contractor arrives, will
I be notified before the installation takes place?
The contractor will attempt to notify you before working on the meter(s).
What time of the day will the meter exchanges/updates
take place?
The majority of the meter exchanges/updates will occur Monday through
Saturday between 7 a.m. and dusk.
How long will the installation take?
The installation process takes between 5 and 30 minutes per meter.
However, if access to your meter(s) is (are) blocked by landscaping or
any other type of obstruction, it could take longer.
Who will install the automated meter reading technology,
and how will the installer be identified?
MidAmerican has hired contractors to install the necessary equipment
to update your meter(s) with automated meter reading technology. The contractors will
have both MidAmerican contractor identification and identification from their
own company.
What work will the installers be
doing?
Almost all of MidAmerican’s residential and commercial meters will be
replaced or updated to accommodate automated meter reading technology.
The new electric meters will have a digital display instead of traditional
dials. For the majority of MidAmerican’s customers, the existing natural
gas meter will look nearly identical to traditional dials, but with a
transmitting device installed. There are some types of natural gas meters
that cannot be updated with the new transmitting device. Those meters
will be replaced.
I have electric service with MidAmerican. Will my power go out
during the installation?
Yes, there will be a brief power outage when your electrical meter
is replaced.
I have natural gas service with MidAmerican. Will I have a
gas service interruption during the installation?
Adding automated meter reading technology to an existing
gas meter will not interrupt your gas service. If the existing gas meter must be replaced to
accommodate the new technology, gas service will be interrupted. If this is the case and
you are not present, a door hanger will be left with additional instructions.
After Installation
How will I know if my meter has been exchanged and/or
updated?
If no one is present at the property when the work is done, a door hanger will be left
letting you know whether the replacement was completed. If it was not completed,
additional instructions will be listed on the door hanger.
Will I have to pay for the device on my gas meter or the new
electric meter?
No. You will not be charged for the installation of the automated meter reading technology.
