Net Metering Rate
Net metering is a billing method offered in MidAmerican Energy's Iowa and Illinois service territories and is available to eligible renewable distributed generation facilities, where energy delivered to MidAmerican at the metering location is subtracted from the energy consumed (kilowatt-hour consumed minus kilowatt-hour delivered). If a customer consumes more energy than it delivers, the resulting net kilowatt-hour is billed to the customer at the same electric rate at which the customer normally purchases its energy from MidAmerican. If the customer delivers excess energy to MidAmerican’s electric distribution system during the billing period, net metering provides the customer energy credits that can be stored in the customer’s account for future use in subsequent billing periods.

An eligible renewable electrical generating facility is defined as an electric generator rated up to 500 kilowatts located in MidAmerican's Iowa service territory or up to 2,000 kilowatts in MidAmerican's Illinois service territory, which is powered by alternate energy sources such as solar, wind, dedicated crops grown for electricity generation, anaerobic digestion of livestock or food processing waste, or hydroelectric energy.

Customers interested in net metering must first complete and submit a net metering application (Illinois only), and then complete the interconnection process as described on the customer generation page. The net metering application (Illinois only), and applicable net metering tariffs and frequently asked questions for each state are:
